She was determine to make something of herself, and with hard work, determination, and perseverance eventually earned a Master’s degree in Education Policy from Penn State University while continuing to teach during the day.

Through Berniece’s story it is clear that no matter what obstacles stand in the way, with genuine effort we can turn our dreams into reality. Her story is one that should give hope to anyone who feels like they’ll never realize their potential or reach their goals—especially anyone who has been subject to racial prejudice or rigidity from society as a whole.

Becoming an Entrepreneur and Trailblazer

Berniece Julien refused to accept her circumstances, even when it seemed like all odds were against her. She decided to take a leap of faith and become an entrepreneur. At the time, it didn’t feel like a brave move—it felt like the only option for a single mother with three children pulling herself up from poverty. But Julien didn’t allow fear to stand in the way of her success. In 2001, she founded Berniece Julien & Associates. The firm specialized in event planning, public relations, and communications services and became an instant success. Julien learned quickly on how to build relationships with clients and government agencies and how to manage complex projects with finesse. Eventually, she would become

a business advisor for hundreds of Start Up companies, providing valuable advice on how to succeed in their respective markets.

As if that wasn’t enough, Berniece Julien also became an advocate for women in business and opened up her own foundation—the Berniece Julien Leadership and Entrepreneurship Foundation—which provided financial aid scholarships for returning female veterans and entrepreneurs from underserved communities. She continues to use her platform as a pioneer for female trailblazers everywhere who are seeking opportunity and she frequently does talks about pursuing one’s dreams despite obstacles.
